The issue's been raised by Ennistymon Senator Martin Conway who says members of the voluntary sector should be recognised for their efforts – if they've done so for a specific period.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald rejected a suggestion that reservists applying to join the permanent force should automatically go through to interview level.
But Senator Conway believes it would encourage more people to consider working as a Garda reserve:
