Council Admits Shannon Water Targets Won’t Be Met

Clare County Council has admitted that it will not be able to meet water quality targets as part of the Shannon River Basin project.

Under EU regulations, the Council is obliged to maintain the ‘high status’ of waters where it exists, and to improve water quality in other areas by 2015.

However, speaking at a joint meeting of the local authority’s environment and planning group, environment director David Timlin said the targets will not be met, in part because of tight resource constraints.

However Mr Timlin said that the Council will nonetheless try to meet their objectives.
