Council Confident That Flood Defences In Ennis Will Protect Against Future Storms

Clare County Council says it's confident that flood defences in Ennis will protect against future storms.

Millions of euro has been invested in increased defences since flooding devastated the town in 2009 and the local authority's Senior Engineer Tom Tiernan says its proven successful over the past number of days.

Meanwhile, a clean-up operation is underway in many parts following the heavy rain.

Emergency services were high alert over the weekend as Storm Desmond swept through the county.

A number of roads became impassable, and issues remain in some areas even though the flood waters have receded.

The Council estimates that around 25 private dwellings were flooded, including a small number in the Abbey Street area of Ennis.

Despite this, the local authoity insists the OPW-funded storm protection measures, which have been built since the major flooding event of 2009, "saved Ennis" from the same devastation again.

Senior Engineer Tom Tiernan says its regrettable that a small number of people were impacted, but is confident that flood defences in Ennis will hold up if storms occur again in the future.

Another area hit by flooding issues was Woodgrove in the Cloughleigh area of the town.

One resident there, Bridget Mooney, was forced to leave her home as waters began to rise, she there's considerable damage.

Flooding has also been severe on farmland throughout the county, especially in East Clare, while in Ballyvaughan a clean-up operation is underway after flood waters entered two homes and the Medical Centre.

Locals took it upon themselves to break down a wall, easing some of the pressures, but now say more preventative measures are required.

Ballyvaughan resident Patrick O'Donoghue was on of those involved.

Motorists are being advised to proceed with caution in areas still affected by flooding, though conditions are improving.

The Council says it's also keeping a watchful eye on weather conditions over the coming days, with further heavy rains currently forecast for Wednesday.
