Clare County Council is set to pay over €300,000 to cover the cost of the local property tax for its housing stock.
The local authority has already paid just over €101,000 for 2013, and faces a bill of double that amount for next year, as Councillors prepare to draw up their budget for the year ahead.

While residents in Clare’s 2,251 local authority homes are given an exemption for the tax, the Council itself must pay the charge, though as people in other counties face a hike in their rents to cover the cost, a spokesperson for Clare County Council says they’ve made no decision on how the money will be recouped.
