Council Issue Flood Warning with Status Orange Warning In Place

Clare County Council is reminding home, business and land owners in flood prone locations and along low lying areas of the coast that there is potential for further flooding tonight and tomorrow morning.

The Council says Lahinch Promenade remains closed to the public until further notice after the Promenade walkways and seawall were "seriously compromised" during stormy weather on Friday morning.

Met Eireann has today issued a new ‘Orange Alert’ for County Clare warning of the danger of coastal flooding due to the combination of the gale force winds, high tides and very high seas. Heavy thundery downpours may lead to local spot flooding inland also.

Council Senior Engineer, Tom Tiernan said: "We are advising members of the public to stay away from the seafront, particularly at Lahinch where it simply is not safe for people to be there as the structure of the promenade is seriously compromised. The facility will be reopened for public use as soon as possible.”

Clare County Council, in conjunction with the Emergency Services, says it is also progressing contingency arrangements in terms of additional pumping capacity and other flood alleviation measures at flood prone locations throughout Clare.

The Council confirmed that river levels have increased significantly over the past 10 days, and arrangements have been put in place to continuously monitor the situation.

In light of the high river levels, land, home and business owners along with motorists are being urged to exercise increased vigilance concerning the potential for localised flooding.

Flooding advice is available on www.flooding.ie. Information included on the website includes advice on identifying flooding risks, protecting property against flooding, necessary steps to be taken if a property is flooded, and assessing and repairing property damaged by flooding.
