Council Issues Government Demand For Storm Repairs Decision

The government is being asked for an immediate response to all applications to repair and protect the Clare Coast, as local politicians express their total frustration at the level of inaction so far.

This motion was carried by members of Clare County Council following a special meeting in which the county's Senior Engineer said answers are needed on further government funding if a proper programme of coastal works is to be devised.

€3 million has been spent so far out of an allocated €16 million, but with no decisions on a second round of funding Councillors were told they can wait and hope for more money, or start prioritising the areas where works may be carried out.

Meanwhile, Quilty residents are giving a cautious welcome to progress on plans for future coastal protection works in the Clohaninchy area.

The OPW is to consider an application for a one million euro feasibility study to be carried out with a view to providing storms defences worth €4 million more to protect up to 15 homes left devastated by January and February's storms.
