Council Looks To Invoke Garda Powers In Tackling Illegal Dumping

Clare County Council is seeking the green light to allow it to tackle illegal dumping using legal powers that are normally reserved for the Gardaí.

The Council is preparing a submission for the Garda Commissioner to allow it greater freedom in using CCTV footage to prosecute those responsible for illegal dumping.

The Data Protection Commissioner has previously expressed concerns relating to GDPR over the use of covert cameras to catch dumpers in the act, but the Garda Siochána act gives more powers to the force to act in this area.

If given the go-ahead, the Council says it’s confident they would then have a more robust legal footing to use CCTV to prosecute illegal dumpers and Kilmurry Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan O’Callaghan says that’s badly needed.
