Clare County Council has joined local authorities across the country in raising a rainbow flag this lunchtime to coincide with the first annual LGBTQ Pride festival of 2016, which is taking place in Dublin this week.

The Council is participating in the inaugural 'Having Pride in Local Government' initiative which is being coordinated by the Local Government Management Agency.

Cathaoirleach James Breen raised the flag at noon today at the local authority's corporate headquarters on New Road in Ennis.

He says the raising of the flag is also a mark of respect for the victims of the shooting in Orlando, Florida earlier this month.

It's the first time a rainbow flag has been raised at the council offices in Ennis.

And Senior Executive Officer with Clare County Council Jason Murphy says it's an opportunity to step up to the mark.
