County Clare’s central waste management facility near Inagh could close next year, under recommendations made by Clare County Council.
A report presented to last night’s meeting of the local authority, says the landfill at Ballyduffbeg should stop accepting waste unless a new phase is developed, though its the four million euro cost "would not make economic sense".
The report therefore recommends closure of the facility "towards the end of 2011", particularly as the waste collected in Inagh will amount to just 21,000 tonnes this year compared to almost 60,000 tonnes in 2003.
The income generated at the Ballyduffbeg site is also a major factor as projected landfill income for 2010 is just over 2 million euro compared to almost 7 million in 2003.
A full council meeting on the issue will take place next month, following a motion from Ennis Councillor James Breen:
