Council Rejects West Clare Wind Farm Plans

Clare County Council has refused planning application for a West Clare wind farm which counted U.S. billionaire Donald Trump as one of its objectors.

Over 40 people had voiced their concerns about plans to construct nine wind turbines just south of Doonbeg.

Clare Coastal Wind Power Limited had sought permission to erect the turbines and carry out other associated works on lands at Carrowmeore South, Einagh and Shragh, about 2 kilometres south of Doonbeg village.

At their tallest point, the turbines would have reached 126 metres in height.

In all, the Council received 42 public submissions, including one prepared on behalf of Trump International Golf Links Ireland.

This argued he development would have had a significant negative impact on tourism, endangering jobs at the resort and in the surrounding area.

The Council has now decided to refuse planning permission.

The local authority has told the developers that it would have led to an excessive number of wind turbines in the area, would detract from tourism and potentially pose a risk to water pollution.

On twitter, Donald Trump has called the decision 'great news', though it can be appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
