Council Removing Iconic Ennis Monument For €4.1m Spire

There has been mixed reaction to the news that the most iconic landmark in Ennis is to be torn down and replaced by the West of Ireland’s very own Spire.

The Daniel O’Connell monument, which is over 150 years old, has been steadily eroding in recent years and has now been deemed as a health and safety risk.

But in keeping with the name of the area, The Height, it will be replaced by a 400 foot metal structure, surpassing Dublin’s Spire and becoming the highest sculpture in Ireland.

Clare County Council says the estimated cost of the project is €4.1 million and has rejected suggestions that the figure could spiral due to rising construction costs.

Former Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Tom McNamara says some of the costs could be offset by installing a wind turbine on top of the spire.
