Council Sent Back To Drawing Board On Blake’s Corner

Clare County Council has been told to go back to the drawing board after plans to deal with long standing traffic issues in Ennistymon have been rejected by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

TII has described the plans for Blake's corner as an "interim solution".

Plans to deal with long-standing traffic issues at Blake's corner included the construction of a new bridge 80 metres upstream from the existing Ennistymon Bridge on the N67.

It would initially have been used for Lahinch-bound traffic, while traffic coming from the seaside village would continue to use the existing bridge.

The necessity for Phase 2 of the project, which provided for two-way traffic on the new bridge, would have been based on emerging traffic needs.

But Transport Infrastructire Ireland says the two-phase scheme is an "interim solution which doesn’t cater for long term growth or vulnerable road user demands" and as a result, it isn't "in a position to grant approval for the scheme".

The body has advised to local authority to revisit the scheme proposals to "maximise the chance of securing all necessary statutory approvals and limited public funding".

Clare County Council says the project Steering Committee will engage with TII to identify solutions to the specific areas of concern.
