Councillor claims non nationals at centre of Ennis racism

An Ennis Councillor has claimed that racism is alive and well in the town, but says most of it is caused by non -national residents.

Following on from the controversy caused by the former Mayor of Naas, who refused to represent what he described as "Black Africans", members of Ennis Town Council discussed this week voting against a proposal to train councillors on equality legislation.

Some members were annoyed at the suggestion, including Independent Frankie Neylon, who said he didn’t need training in how to deal with the 26 nationalities living in Ennis.

And he claimed that 60% of racism in Ennis is caused by non-national residents themselves,  citing a number of examples he’s heard of

The motion calling for mandatory racism and anti discrimination training for elected councillors was proposed at Ennis Town Council by Labour’s Paul O’Shea.

Following comments from councillors opposed to his suggestion and the defeat of the motion, he expressed disappointment at the sentiments expressed
