A Clare Fine Gael Councillor has described the government’s announcement that home owners must pay for the installation of water meters as a ‘backward step’
It follows the Taoiseach’s admission that people will have to pay for the meters – media reports have speculated that this charge could be up to 300 euro, but Enda Kenny insists any charge will be kept to an absolute minimum.
Under the terms of the EU/IMF deal the government is obliged to introduce water charges by 2013, but local members of the government parties admit it will be difficult to get the support of the public
