Councillors Call For Comprehensive Policing Plan After Garda Station Closures

Clare’s Chief Superintendent is being urged to put all additional resources arising from the impending garda station closures into mobile units in the affected areas.

Eight stations are set to shut down by January 31st and there was a heated debate among county councillors last night on the issue.

Fianna Fail representatives claimed the coalition was decommissiong rural Ireland and accused local Fine Gael Councillors of providing more protection to Justice Minister Alan Shatter than was seen at Thomand Park on Sunday.

However local Fine Gael councillors hit back and expressed their confidence in Chief Superintendent’s future plan for policing across Clare.

Fine Gael Councillor Joe Arkins firmly believes policing the beat is a far more effective deterent than having a mostly unmanned garda station open
