Clare Councillors have defended a proposal which has seen the local authority ask the Government to dock the social welfare payments of criminals, until their victims are compensated.
Local representatives have passed the motion at their monthly meeting, following a proposal from Meelick Councillor Cathal Crowe.
He has argued that those responsible for acts of theft and vandalism should not receive their full social welfare payments, until the money docked has been used to compensate victims.
Though the motion will not directly change the law, Councillor Crowe feels that it’s a matter which does merit discussion and hopes it may influence national legislation
