Describing it as a ‘poignant moment for himself personally’, Mayor of Clare Christy Curtin led the tributes to Eoin Ryan at last evening’s meeting of Clare County Council.

Councillor Curtin, who along with Lissycasey Councillor PJ Kelly is an uncle through marriage of the late 21 year old, said the loss of the popular law student ‘can never be measured’ and has ‘left an indelible mark’ upon his family

Before a formal adjournment was called, sympathies were also expressed to Clonlara resident George O’Callaghan, Chief Executive of the Clare VEC, and his wife Patsy on the tragic death of their seven year-old son Patrick, as well as the families of former Shannon Town Clerk Tomáis MacCormaic and former editor of the Clare Champion, Frank O’Dea.

Councillors also paid tribute to the late Taoiseach Garrett Fitzgerald, former Attorney General Declan Costello and former Finance Minister Brian Lenihan who, the meeting heard, was a ‘courageous man… who put his country before himself.’

The co-option of Shannon’s Sean McLoughlin and Bill Slattery from Lahinch will now take place next Monday.
