Councillors step up campaign against budget cuts

Guidance counsellors from around the country are meeting this afternoon to discuss budget cuts and call for a campaign of protest.

From next September, a 500-pupil school will be allocated 26 teachers, a principal, deputy principal – but no guidance counsellor.

Because of the cutbacks, counsellors who are currently available full-time to second-level pupils will have to fit counselling duties in between teaching classes.

Guidance Counsellor at the University of Limerick, Dr Lucy Hearne, says it’s a regressive step – especially since counsellors have fought long and hard to be officially recognised.
