County Council could face a representative cut

The newly elected Mayor of Clare feels a rumoured reduction in the number of County Councillors is workable, provided the government does not go to far.

Ennis Councillor Pat Daly has revealed that local representatives are bracing themselves for a cut of up to 10 in the number of elected officials on Clare County Council, as part of cost-cutting reforms.

Rumours among elected representatives also suggest that the number of town councils will be cut from 2014 – Minister Phil Hogan will reveal his plans later this month.

Concern has been expressed that the cuts could lead to a lack of representation for rural areas, and Councillor Daly feels a balance has to be struck
