Only 35% Of Fines Paid To Clare Courts

Two-thirds of fines issued in Clare courts in the past two years have not been paid.

Over a million euro worth of fines have been levied here int he past two years, but the majority of this money has not been handed over.

In 2017 and 2018, Judges in the courts in Ennis, Killaloe and Kilrush issued nearly 2,900 fines, with a total value of €1.03 million.

However, new figures from the courts service show that €668,000 of that has yet to be paid.

A small number of the fines have been deemed uncollectable, and an even smaller amount have been part paid, but in the main the money simply hasn’t been paid by those who have appeared before the courts.

Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of the fines levied have been at Ennis Courthouse and it is here, too, where the highest rate of non-payment is recorded.

In 2017, fines were most likely to be paid in the Kilrush area but last year the highest compliance rate was for the courts in Killaloe.

The figures are broadly in line with the national trends, but the recovery rate here was lower than the national average in 2017.
