The Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District is hitting out at the Government over the decision to relocate nine Syrian families to Ennistymon.
Clare County Council has confirmed that the families fleeing the war torn country, will arrive here in late January or Early February, as part of the Government's committment under the EU Relocation Programme.
Ireland has agreed to take in around 4,000 Syrian refugees by 2017, with 520 of those coming to Clare – the first group of nine families have already relocated to the Shannon and Sixmilebridge in June.
Funding from central Government has been allocated towards housing the families but Councillor Bill Slattery has been telling me that he believes efforts should have been made to reduce the social housing list in the North Clare town first.
