Clare’s Senator is calling on the Garda Commissioner to ensure stability within the Clare division into the future.
It comes as it’s emerged that Clare’s Chief Superintendent is leaving the position after less than three months in the role.
Limerick native, Chief Superintendent Michael Gubbins is leaving the Clare Garda Division after less than three months in the role, to take up a new position in Dublin, where he was based for several decades.
But his successor has already been appointed and will take up his position on Tuesday.
Newly-promoted to the position of Chief Superintendent, Sean Colleran has significant Garda experience and worked in senior roles in a number of stations in the West of the Country, and will be based in Clare.
But now, as Clare faces into a third Chief Superintendent in the space of six months, these ongoing changes at the helm of the Clare Garda Division have led to concern in some quarters.
Sixmilebridge Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan O’Callaghan, who’s a member of the county’s Joint Policing Committee, doesn’t want to see policing here impacted by ongoing staffing changes.
Clare’s Senator has welcomed the appointment of Chief Superintendent Colleran, but says it should have been made known if his predecessor’s appointment was only intended to be a stop-gap measure.
Martin Conway believes that his experience in the West of the country will significantly benefit the Clare Garda Division and hopes to see further links developed between here and neighbouring counties.
An amalgamation of the Clare and Galway divisions hasn’t been ruled out in the future, and Senator Conway hopes that isn’t on the cards. He’s calling on Commissioner Drew Harris to ensure stability into the future.
