Concern Shannon Gas Terminal Would Be “Environmental Disaster”

A Clare environmental campaigner is accusing the government of ignoring the wishes of the public, over its support of a gas terminal for the Shannon Estuary.

Shannon LNG is looking to develop the facility at Tarbert in Co. Kerry, but environmentalists are strongly opposed to the project because they say fracked gas will be imported for use there, even though fracking is banned in ilrenad.

Today, the EU is due to sign off on a number of energy projects, with this terminal among them, and the Environment Minister Richard Bruton has told the Dáil that he’s been advised it’s an important piece of infrastructure for the State.

Anne Marie Harrington, co-founder of campaign group Futureproof Clare, says it’s immoral of the government to get behind it:
