Thousands of fans are flocking Clare’s County Town hoping to catch a glimpse of the former world heavyweight champion.

67 year old Muhammad Ali is due in the county around half two this afternoon when he will travel from Shannon to Ennis.

First up on the agenda for the former world champion is a civic reception from Ennis Town Council to acknowledge his ancestral roots to the town.

Mr Ali will become the first ever Freeman of Ennis.

A motorcade, carrying the sporting great will then travel up through the town and stop in the Turnpike at the former home of Abe Grady, his great grandfather who immigrated to the US in the 1860’s.

Muhammad Ali, who was born Cassius Clay Junior, will then travel onto a private function in Dromoland.

Thousands of people are expected in the Abbey Street Car Park for a free open air event to mark the occasion with the festivities due to get underway around 12.30 this afternoon

A number of road closures have been put in place by Gardai for Muhammad Ali’s visit.

Abbey Street Car Park will be closed to traffic from 10am this morning and a number of other roads will be closed from 12.30 until 5 o’clock.

People intending to come into Ennis for the day are advised to arrive early and park outside the town centre.
