Decision On Apple Tax Appeal May Not Be Made Today

The Cabinet may not make a decision today on appealing the Apple tax ruling.

Ministers have been meeting since late morning following the European Commission ruling that the State must collect 13 billion in back taxes from the tech giant.

A number of the Independent ministers have concerns about launching an appeal, while here there are mixed views too.

Minister Michael Noonan is looking for permission to appeal the EU's decision at today's cabinet meeting in government buildings.

Fine Gael's position is that Ireland should appeal to ensure it can set it's own taxes without European interference – however Independent Ministers are unsure and it's understood they would like the Dáil to be recalled for a debate.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny says everyone needs time to digest the ruling and hinted that a decision may not be made today.

He, and Independent Children's Minister Katherine Zappone, spoke before today's meeting.

Sinn Fein are against the proposed appeal, and have called for a public inquiry into the matter.

The party's Clare Councillor, Shannon's Mike McKee, thinks the tax deal is an insult to small Irish businesses.

Ironically, while there is disagreement around the cabinet table about the next course of action, it seems there is support for an appeal in Leinster House itself.

Labour and Fianna Fáil both support the Fine Gael plan.

Clare Fianna Fáil TDTimmy Dooley believes a "bigger game is at play" than just Apple's taxes

Any appeal doesn't have to be lodged for over two months, but any indecision could make the Government look weak, and strengthen calls for a recall of the Dáil.
