Deputy Murphy Wants To Be Tried With Other Accused Of Imprisoning Joan Burton

AAA TD Paul Murphy says he wants to be tried with all the other water charge protestors accused of falsely imprisoning the Tánaiste in Dublin.

He’s one of sixteen people facing trial after Joan Burton and one of her advisers were alleged trapped in their car in Jobstown in November 2014.

A large group of supporters awaited the Jobstown protesters outside court again this morning.

Inside, Judge Melanie Greally heard that the DPP sent a letter to all the accused to outline her reasons for wanting to hold separate trials.

It is the State’s case that the Tánaiste and one of her advisers were trapped in their car for hours while trying to move from a graduation ceremony to a nearby church in November 2014.

Sixteen people, including AAA TD Paul Murphy and two of the party’s councillors, have since been charged with false imprisonment, and a number of others are facing various public order offences.

Deputy Murphy says the consensus among the group is to be tried together.

Deputy Murphy and a number of others have already replied to the DPP seeking further clarification and the cases have been put back until next month when a hearing on the issue may be needed.
