Undertakers, who've met the council about the issue, say that the rocky nature of the ground at Ennistymon Cemetery make it extremely hard to dig plots.

Among the concerns voiced was that the use of heavy machinery could damage other graves.

The matter brought before this week's meeting of the West Clare Municipal District by Cllr Bill Slattery who called on the authority to prepare 8 to 10 plots in advance.

In response, the council's rejected suggestions that rock breakers are needed and said pre-digging of graves wasn't possible due to the risk of subsidence.
