Doonbeg Locals Hope To Maintain Whitehouse Link

Voting is underway in the much-anticipated and historic US Presidential election.

A record turnout is expected, as voters decide between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

In Doonbeg, meanwhile, at least some locals are still hoping to retain their local links to the White House.

There’s already been a record turnout in early voting with the expectation that more people will vote in this election than in any other in the past 100 years.

Results will begin to emerge from midnight Irish time, but if matters are tight it could be a number of days before we know whether Joe Biden is to become the next US President, or whether Donald Trump will stay on in the White House.

Joe Biden holds a strong lead nationally, but it is much closer in some of the swing states.

Pollster with IPSOS Chris Jackson, says two states early on could give an indicator of which way the election will go:

Here at home, there’s keen interest in the poll, particularly in the West Clare village of Doonbeg, which is home to the Trump family’s five-star hotel and golf resort, and the ancestral links to the village of Vice President Mike Pence.

There’s also strong support for the President, at least among some locals.

Liam Ryan, who’s a member of the Duckmore Coastal Protection group says it’s vital that West Clare maintains links with the Whitehouse.

And while there has been strong criticism of some of Donald Trump’s policies while in power, another Doonbeg man, Michael O’ Doherty, has outlined why many in West Clare still support him.
