Dundon wants trial for murder of rugby player delayed

Limerick man John Dundon is asking the High Court to delay until next year his trial for the murder of Garryowen rugby player Shane Geoghegan.

The 30 year old formerly of Hyde Road called a judge at the Special Criminal Court a ‘big fat pig’ last week after the court ruled that his trial could go ahead as scheduled next month.

John Dundon was charged last October with Shane Geoghegan’s murder at Dooradoyle in 2008.

His lawyers say 7 months later in April and May of this year, gardai served them with over 25 thousand unpaginated documents – some dog eared and in poor condition.

The defence has also received over 12 hundred discs of CCTV footage, 2 hard drives and memory sticks.

Dundon’s lawyers  say to sift throught all of this material ahead of next month is not humanly possible and jeopardises the 30 year old’s right to a fair trial

The High Court has agreed to review last week’s decision by the Special Criminal Court to allow the case to proceed in June.

The DPP is to be put on notice of the challenge and the case will come back to court tomorrow.
