€3 Million Needed To Clear Waiting List For Housing Adaptation Grants In Clare

Over three million euro in funding is needed to clear the waiting list for housing adaptation grants in the county at the end of this year.

Figures released to Clare FM, by Clare County Council, show 292 grants have been approved for 2016, though 122 have yet to be paid out.

481 applications, however, have yet to receive approval.

Just over 1.9 million has been allocated by Clare County Council in 2016 towards three schemes, namely the housing adaptation grant for people with a disability, housing aid for older people and the mobility aids grant.

170 applications have been approved and paid out in the months up to September, amounting to a spend of over 1.1 million, while a further 122 have been approved, but require works to be completed before the finances will be distributed.

The council says further approvals may be issued this year, if there's a delay in uptake by other approved applicants.

Based on current predictions, 481 applicants will remain on the waiting list at the end of this year, which means that just over 3.1 million euro will be required to clear the backlog.

This year's figures suggest it could take up to two years before this backlog will be cleared.
