€5m In State Funds Spent On Security At Shannon Airport

The Taoiseach says five million euro has been spent on providing security at Shannon Airport over the past thirteen years.

The Irish Times reports that in a written Dáil reply to Mayo TD Lisa Chambers, Enda Kenny said that the Department of Justice and An Garda Síochána had primary responsibility for the State’s internal security.

He revealed that since February 5th, 2003, the Defence Forces provided aid, which in practice meant An Garda Síochána, at the airport when requested to do so.

The costs involved the payment of security duty allowance, as well as the provision of rations and fuel.

The highest sum paid out in any one year was 1.1 million euro in 2003.
