A group of East Clare Councillors have spoken out against a proposal which would have seen calls made for a levy to be charged on Irish Water, to compensate Clare and Tipperary for the extraction of water from the River Shannon.
The state utility is persuing a controversial plan which would see it divert up to millions of litres of water a day from the Shannon to shore up supply in the Midlands and Dublin.
Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Johnny Flynn says up to ten million euro a year could be generated through the levy, which would be linked to the amount of water taken, but this call was rejected by a number of East Clare Councillors who fear that such a move would amount to a tacit approval of the project.
Councillor Flynn feels the revenues generated could be invested in shoring up waste water infrastructure deficits here.
