A payments blunder at Eircom means some 30,000 customers face bumper bills.
The company failed to collect direct debits at the start of the year and it means subscribers will be asked to pay the backdated amount all in one go.

Some households are in arrears since October because of the systems error and could now be asked to pay up to €500.
According to the Irish Independent, Eircom will work with customers who have difficulties in paying but this will be on a case-by-case basis.
