Elderly Limerick Man Charged With Rape Of Clare Girl

An 82-year old Limerick man yesterday appeared in court charged with three separate counts of rape against a girl in Co Clare more than a decade ago.

The man required the aid of a walking stick to enter and exit the court yesterday appearing for the first time in connection with the alleged offences between May 1st 2003 and 31st of May 2004.

Two of the rape offences are alleged to have taken place in south east Clare with the third in west Clare during the period against the same female victim.

The man – who celebrated his 82nd birthday in September – made no reply when charged and cautioned.

Inspector Tom Kennedy said that the case would be heard in the Central Criminal Court and Judge Patrick Durcan extended time for the serving of the Book of Evidence.

Judge Durcan remanded the accused on bail to re-appear before Ennis District Court on January 14th next.
