Eleven Suffer Casualties Climbing Croagh Patrick

Eleven people suffered minor leg injuries and hypothermia while attempting to climb Croagh Patrick yesterday, despite the annual pilgrimage being cancelled due to bad weather.

Up to 30,000 pilgrims traditionally climb the County Mayo peak on the last Sunday in July, known as Reek Sunday.

The event was called off due to heavy rain and strong winds.

However Jerome Hopkins of Mayo Mountain Rescue said while some climbers did heed the weather warning – many didn't – and a number of children were among the casualties.
