Clare County fire Service battled the blaze at the facility in Drumcliffe for over three hours this morning.

The alarm was raised shortly after 3.30am when a fire broke out at the water treatment plant on the outskirts of Ennis.

Two units of the Ennis fire brigade were dispatched along with a hydraulic platform but an additional fire appliance from Shannon was later sent to the scene.

The plant, which supplies drinking water to over 30,000 consumers in Ennis Town and its environs, was quickly shut down while fire crews located and dealt with what's now believed to have been an electrical fire.

ESB engineers were also called to the scene.

Shortly after 5 o'clock it was confirmed that the fire had been successfully extinguished and crews remained on the scene until half six this morning.

It's not yet known whether water supply to Ennis has been or will be affected as a result of the fire.

Gardaí say they're satisfied that there was no criminal element involved.
