Its feared that any potential employment hit at the Ennis based Whelan Group could have a serious knock on effect on other industries in the sector.
Solicitors for the group have made an application to the High Court under the Companies Act, and lodged a number of affidavits covering several of the group’s companies, which collectively employ over 150 people.
The company has operations in Clare, Limerick, Cork and Roscommon and was one of the main suppliers of stone on the Crusheen to Gort By Pass.
A spokesman for the company insists its business as usual.
Ruan Councillor Joe Arkins fears that any potential difficulties at Whelan’s could have a severe knock-on effect.
