Ennis-Based Addiction Councillor Says Misuse Of Alcohol Remains Just As Big A Problem As Ever

An Ennis-based addiction counsellor says misuse of alcohol remains just as big a problem as ever in Ireland.

That's despite new research from DCU showing a further decrease in alcohol consumption in 2015, continuing a long-term trend of decline over the last fifteen years,

However it also shows we drink more that the OECD average, at over 11 litres per year. 

Gerry Murphy, Team Leader at the Bushypark Addiction Treatment Centre says the number of young people that have left the country and the fact that around 20% of Irish people don't drink should be borne in mind when considering these statistics. 

And he claims the centre has seen an a particular increase in the number of women who are having alcohol problems.
