Concern has been raised about crime in Ennis over recent weeks following a spate of robberies and break-ins.

Knives have been used in separate raids on stores, while two overnight smash and grab raids at Cassidy's Pharmacy on O'Connell Street and at Ennis Electrical on Parnell Street saw raiders make off with tens of thousands of euro of stock on both occasions.

In light of this, figures from within Ennis Chamber of Commerce met with local Gardaí this week.

It was agreed that new structures would be put in place to facilitate the reporting of anti-social behaviour, while discussions also focussed on retaining the Purple Flag, which acknowledges a high-quality night-time experience and which had Ennis as its first Irish recipient.

Meanwhile, senior Gardaí are expected to address Ennis Councillors on Monday, when the issue is raised at their regular meeting.
