Ennis Businesses Will Have Their Say On Town Reviltalisation Plans

Businesses in Ennis will have their say on how a plan to revitalise the town centre proceeds.

One million euro has been granted to Ennis as designated hub town but the money must be matched by a further million euro in order to go ahead.

Ennis was named a designated hub town in 2002 under the national spacial strategy, as its the largest town in Munster and the eleventh largest town or city in the country.

Since then money was supposed to be sent to designated hubs, such as Ennis, to revitalise the town and as a result the rural hinterland, but that money was never delivered.

Now, one million euro in funding has been granted to the county town but with a number of conditions – it must be spent within three years and on specific large-scale projects.

Councillor Johnny Flynn says a number of projects could benefit from this funding.

A decision will have to be made in the coming months on what project or projects will receive funding but the revitalisation of the Height or the upgrading of Parnell Street are curretly being looked at by Councillors.

Mayor of Clare James Breen says businesses in Ennis will have their say in how the project proceeds.

Local businesses have welcomed the announcement, saying much work needs to be done to improve Ennis.

Brian O'Neill of Promote Ennis hopes the money will go towards the best possible project.
