Ennis Economist Warns Challenges Remain Despite Positive Economic Outlook

An Ennis economist has warned that significant challenges remain despite a positive outlook for the economy over the coming year.

It comes as the Central Bank’s quarterly report has predicted strong growth over the coming 12 months, with the numbers in employment higher than the peak at the end of the Celtic Tiger era.

The Celtic Tiger may be long gone, but now we’re seeing the rise of the ‘Celtic Phoenix.’

Or so it seems, after the Central Bank said Ireland’s economic recovery will continue with even more strong growth in 2018.

An additional 89,000 people are expected to be in work across the country, which will mean that overall employment will be at a higher level than the pre-recession peak, and people will have about 3 per cent more money in their pockets.

Part of the upturn is reportedly due to stronger demand from our main trading partners, but there are risks ahead, as the Central Bank’s Mark Cassidy explains.

Clare’s Junior Minister insists that the banner will feel the benefits of the growth and says that efforts are continuing to ensure that we get our fair share of new jobs.

Fine Gael Minister of State Pat Breen says it’s important that growth is spread to all regions.

But an Ennis economist says tough political decisions will be needed to ensure adequate planning for growth in every region in the years ahead.

Assistant Professor of Social Policy at UCD, Dr Micheál Collins says that while the outlook is positive, challenges remain.
