Ennis homeless man case back before courts

A homeless man who was sleeping in public toilets in Ennis is back on the streets once again as his case comes before the local district court today.

Czech national Josef Pavelka was given emergency accommodation in Galway last month after Judge Patrick Durkan described his living conditions as a scandal, but he’s returned to Ennis in the past week even though he was nowhere to live.

The case of Josef Pavelka received widespread local and national attention after his court appearance  on public order offences in early April and his subsequent interview on Clare FM when he and Polish man Peter Baram spoke about their sleeping conditions in Ennis

Ennis District Court has heard that 55 year old Mr Pavelka is an alcoholic facing  5 charges of being drunk in public, but on hearing of living conditions,  Judge Patrick Durkan called on the caring agencies of Ennis to help him, prompting the St Vincent de Paul to arrange emergency shelter in Galway – even though Mr Pavelka and his friend Peter Baram do not have habitual residency rights in Ireland.

Two weeks on –  the two men have left that accommodation and returned to Ennis, as Judge Durkan awaits a progress report on Josef Pavelka’s situation and prepares to deal with charges facing him later today.
