Ennis is in the running for the title of Ireland’s Cleanest Town alongside Roscommon and last year’s winner Kildare.

It’s after the county town was deemed Cleaner Than European Norms in the IBAL Anti Litter League, with all link roads into Ennis getting the top litter grade.

This standard was maintained for almost all of the sites surveyed, with the residential areas of Westfield and Market Square highlighted as two of the best ranking spots.

It was noted that chewing gum was a problem in many parts of the town, but An Taisce, which carried out the survey, says this is probably an indication of other litter making the gum more obvious.

Ennis was among 25 towns and cities surveyed on behalf of IBAL – if it wins today, a specially commissioned public sculpture worth up to €40,000 will be errected in the town.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Dublin this afternoon by Minister Denis Naughton.
