An upgraded mental health day centre is to be built in Ennis, as part of the HSE's Service Plan for next year.
The Gort Glas unit at St. Joseph's Hospital will be refurbished at a total cost of €800,000, while the plan also provides €500,000 for additional works in the Local Injuries Unit at Ennis General.
More works will be carried out at University Hospital Limerick, including the construction of two new theatres, while 30 new beds will have opened there by the end of the year in a bid to ease overcrowding.
Separately, the HSE boss has branded waiting list targets for 2015 'unrealistic'.
Their Service Plan for next year – published yesterday – aims to reduce the time it takes to see a hospital consultant to under a year by the end of 2015.
Currently, close to 50 thousand patients are waiting over a year for an appointment.
