Ennis Water Treatment plant under spotlight after weekend fault

Questions are being raised over Ennis’ 9 million euro water treatment plant after a fault left thousands of people with reduced water pressure  over the weekend.

Water tankers had to be drafted in after the plant’s water- filtration system got blocked leading to a loss of production.

Householders in large parts of Ennis, Clarecastle, Barefield, Crusheen and Spancilhill were hit by the latest problem to affect the town’s new water treatment plant.

Its understood that a mechanical fault developed when the facility was unable to process the required amount of water to cater for consumers – due to a long protracted spell of dry weather followed by very heavy rain.

The loss of water production forced the council to reduce water pressure across Clare County Town and its environs both Saturday night and again last night into this morning.

Among the areas affected were
•Tulla Road
•Kilrush Road
•Quin Road
•Gort Road from Ballyalla Junction
•Lahinch Road
•Clare Road
•Clarecastle district
•Barefield / Crusheen Districts
Spancilhill Districts

Fire Tenders from Scarrif Kilrush and Ennis were also drafted in with tankers to deliver thousands of litres of water to affected areas.

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey believes this problem highlights the need for an alternative water source for Ennis and is calling for the Water Augmentation Scheme  to be prioritised and delivered.
