EPA Criticises Pace Of Work Addressing Waste Water Treatment In Clare

The Environmental Protection Agency has criticised the pace of work carried out by Irish Water to address waste water treatment issues in Clare.

The EPA has released it’s annual wastewater treatment report today, which shows that five towns and villages in the county; Ballyvaughan, Clarecastle, Kilkee, Kilrush and Liscannor are still pumping raw sewage into the environment.

Planned works have already been announced for some of these areas with works expected to get underway next year.

Ennistymon, Lahinch and Shannon are among 28 areas where discharges are below EU standards, while 9 areas in Clare have been highlighted amongst the urban areas in need of most improvement.

Senior Inspector with the Office of Environmental Enforcement, Noel Byrne has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that efforts to address issues aren’t proceeding quickly enough.
