EPA Warns Of Impact Of Pesticides On Clare Water Supply

The Environmental Protection Agency is urging caution over the use of pesticides after the substances have been detected in some public water supplies in Clare.

The organisation has carried out audits of the 19 public water supplies in the county and have issued 11 directions to Irish Water, 8 have been complied with and 3, affecting Mountshannon, Feakle and Carron, are in the final stages of completion.

But the EPA has raised concern over the presence of pesticides in the Ennis, Shannon, Sixmilebridge, Ennistymon and West Clare regional supply, which may have seeped in as a result of the use of common weed killers on land.

Aoife Loughnane says it can cause long term health issues but she admits it can only be dealt with by those using the chemicals.
