A project developing wave energy potential off the Clare coast has been awarded 23 million euro by the European Commission.
ESB WestWave, which is located off Killard Point near Doonbeg, is Ireland's first wave energy project and is expected to generate an initial 5 MegaWatts, or enough to power nearby Kilrush and Kilkee, by 2018.

It has already been announced that 50 construction jobs are expected to be created, though if the pilot project is successful than several more are anticipated.
The WestWave initiative is the only Irish project to receive funding under the one billion euro scheme which aims to help fight climate change.
