Ex Mayor Of Clare Concerned Over Government Talks

A former Mayor Of Clare says she's very worried about the slow progress of negotiations on the formation of a new governement.

The comments from former election candidate Patricia McCarthy come as talks continue at government buildings today, with Fine Gael calling on Fianna Fail to begin talks on Government formation this weekend.

There's still no sign of an agreement on the formation of a new administration however talks between the two main parties appear to be edging closer.

While Micheal Martin and Enda Kenny spoke on the phone yesterday they agreed not to meet again until after the vote for Taoiseach on Wednesday – which neither is expected to win.

But Fine Gael says it is now ready to hold meetings with Fianna Fail on possible Government options, and as early as today.

Patricia McCarthy, who ran for the Labour Party in the 1977 General Election and served as an Independent Councillor for Shannon says all sides in the talks must act in a responsible manner.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael is continuing meetings with Independents, including Kilmihil GP Dr. Michael Harty, who in turn will begin round table talks with Fianna Fail on Monday.

But Acting Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald says those don't have to conclude before the two big parties sit down together.
