Farmers Warn Of Long-Term Consequences Of Flooding

Farmers are warning that the impact of the severe flooding of recent months will be felt for years to come.

Farmers across Clare and in South Galway are renewing calls for supports following on from the deluge of rain that hit the area this winter.

Though it's months since the worst of the rains, large parts of farmland remain under water following this winter's bad weather.

Even where the floods have eased, hundreds of acres are still bare, and unable to provide sustenance for any animals.

PJ Baldwin, a farmer in Kiltartan near Gort, says that's devastating for the farmer concerned

Clonlara in South-East Clare was another area hit hard by flooding this winter.

Local farmer Paudie Ryan and his elderly father Pat were forced to evacuate more than 100 cows onto neighbouring farms after the water rose waist-high last December.

Paudie says this has led to huge costs, and he fears he could end up in a similar situation again in the future if something isn't done.

There are also fears of a fodder shortage next winter, as a knock-on effect of the flooding, and calls are being made for funding to compensate the farmers concerned and to fund flood protection measures.

Clare ICMSA Chairman Martin McMahon says this is important, because agriculture is a driving force of the local economy.
